When Should Air Monitoring Be Performed?

Asbestos air monitoring should be considered when any asbestos containing material is being removed to ensure that there is no risk to the health of workers or the public. If the asbestos is classed as friable, the air monitoring is mandatory under workplace health & safety regulations. It is also essential that air monitoring be conducted for all asbestos removal works that are carried out in public areas. All of our asbestos air sampling filters are analysed by a third party NATA accredited laboratory and calculations are conducted by certified laboratory technician. Following analysis, a NATA certified report is issued for all air monitoring results.

Types Of Air Monitoring

Background Air Monitoring

Background air monitoring is the testing of the air for respirable fibres to determine risks associated with damaged asbestos containing materials or prior to removal works to assist in the risk assessment process.

Control Air Monitoring

There are a number of measures to be taken to ensure the risk of exposure is minimised during the removal of asbestos. To ensure that those controls are in place and working effectively, control air monitoring is conducted during any process which requires the disturbance or removal of asbestos containing materials.

Clearance Air Monitoring

Following the removal or disturbance of asbestos in the workplace it is recommended that upon completion of works that clearance asbestos air monitoring be carried out. Clearance air monitoring will ensure that the workplace is free from exposure to airborne asbestos fibres and the site is safe to reoccupy the premises.

Personal Air Monitoring

Personal asbestos air monitoring is carried out to measure airborne fibre concentrations in the immediate breathing zone of persons who are working with asbestos or may be disturbing asbestos during non-asbestos related works. Personal air monitoring will confirm that the measures taken are effectively minimising exposure to airborne asbestos fibres within a person’s breathing space.
