Coronavirus: Protecting your Workplace

COVID-19 also referred to as coronavirus is a respiratory illness first identified in Wuhan, China.

There have been a limited number of cases in Australia, however that number is quickly increasing. A coronavirus infection can range from mild to severe. Those who are especially at risk include elderly people, people with compromised immune systems, and people with diagnosed chronic medical conditions.

If you are sick and think you have symptoms of COVID-19, seek medical attention or call the Australian Government’s National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080.

Coronavirus: Your Legal Duties

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act), employers must, so far as is reasonably practicable provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risks to the health of employees and independent contractors. This includes providing information and training, monitoring health of employees and ensuring that all persons are not exposed to health and safety risks.

Cleaning & Testing of Workplaces

According to the Work Health Organisation, it is not certain how long COVID-19 can survive on surfaces but it could be up to several days.

Abereum can assist with planning and verifying workplace cleanliness through testing of surfaces for general hygiene. Through independent testing and verification you can ensure that your workplace is hygienic and safe for everyone.

The process:

  • Prepare a Workplace Hygiene Cleaning Plan indicating the minimum requirements for cleaning and identifying high-risk areas;
  • Workplace cleaning then to be conducted by qualified personnel under supervision;
  • Abereum can also provide rapid on-site testing to ensure surfaces are adequately cleaned;
  • Post clean verification testing and report.
